The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre why it has not yet constituted a permanent mechanism to check the unprecedented increase in the assets of political candidates over last few years.
A bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, asked the Law Ministry to reply in two weeks over the unprecedented increase of assets of the candidates.
The top court bench was hearing a petition filed by NGO, Lok Prahari, seeking a direction against those political candidates or leaders whose assets have increased at an unprecedented rate and in an illegal manner.
The court sought a report from the Union of India as to why it had not complied with its earlier order and failed to set up a proper mechanism to check the unprecedented increase in the assets or income of certain political candidates in the last few years.
The NGO, in its petition, claimed that the central government had not complied with the earlier order of the Supreme Court and it should immediately comply with it or else must face contempt of court proceedings.
