Srinagar, Mar 13:Alleging that BJP government has consciously disenfranchised people of Jammu and Kashmir, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold Assembly elections so that people get right to choose their own government.
Let the people of the state choose their own government by paving way for holding assembly election, National Conference (NC) vice-president Omar Abdullah said, adding that, ‘We oppose to being governed by a hand-picked nominee of the central government.
Taking to micro-blogging site, Mr Abdullah said, ‘The right to choose an elected government, as opposed to being governed by a handpicked nominee of the central government, is the hallmark of the sort of democracy you are tweeting about. Please give us our democratic right to choose our own government.’
He further tweeted ‘Dear @narendramodi Sahib, it is good to see you appealing to famous people to increase voter turnout. However, at the same time, your government has consciously disenfranchised people in J&K by not holding Assembly elections on time.’
Mr Abdullah was reacting to Mr Modi’s appeal to all people from different walks of life to exercise their franchise.
The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India recently announced poll dates for Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in some states in the country. However, CEC did not announce any date for Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which is under the President’s rule, evoking sharp reaction from mainstream parties in the state and other parts of the country.
However, CEC has appointed a three-member committee to assess the situation on the ground in Jammu and Kashmir before it takes a decision about holding the Assembly elections.
