Ahead of the nation’s tryst with democracy, the Supreme Court on Monday asked the Election Commission of India to file a detailed response by Thursday to the possible increase in counting Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail paper slip in more polling booths and detail the difficulties it could face.
Headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the two-judge bench heard a petition filed by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and a plethora of non-National Democratic Alliance parties.
The 20 other parties, included Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party, Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist).
April 1 was set for further hearing of the writ.
The apex court also said today that it favoured an increase in the number of VVPAT paper slip counting from the present ECI stipulation of matching VVPAT counting with EVM only in one polling station per assembly segment.
ECI submitted that it was fully satisfied with the random matching of VVPAT paper slip counting for one booth per assembly segment to prove authenticity of Electronic Voting Machines but it has always been open to suggestions.
