Counsel for Ram Lalla Virajman, S Vaidyanathan, on Tuesday submitted to a five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, that the recovery of 12th century AD stone slab, from the disputed site, which bears inscriptions in Sanskrit, indicates existence of a temple, pre-dating the Babri Masjid.
Headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, the bench is hearing a batch of appeals against the Allahabad High Court September, 2010, trifurcation of the disputed 2.77 acres site into equal parts for the Lord Rama deity, Nirmohi Akhara and the Sunni Wafk Board.
Mr Vaidyanathan submitted that the Archaeological Survey of India report shows evidence that proves the existence of a Hindu temple before the construction of Babri Masjid.
He also told the apex court that there was public belief that there existed a temple before the construction of Babri Masjid.
Mr Vaidyanathan submitted that ancient scriptures and records which also establish the existence of temple there should be accorded respect.
Submissions would continue at 10.30am tomorrow before the bench which also comprises Justices S A Bobde, Ashok Bhushan, D Y Chandrachud and S Abdul Nazeer.
Since August 6, the apex court is hearing the case on a day-to-day basis, after the failure of the mediation process in the Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute which has caught the attention of the nation.
