As the agitating farmers, marching towards Delhi, were stopped at the Uttar Prdesh border, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday slammed the BJP for preventing them from entering the national capital.
"What is the reason that farmers are prevented from coming to Delhi and raising their demands? Didn't the BJP government, in its campaign, talk about the welfare of farmers? And when the farmers of Uttar Pradesh say that they want sugarcane arrears, loan waiver and cut in electricity prices, why are they not allowed to speak?," Ms Priyanka tweeted.
The Congress leader's response comes at a time when farmers, who were marching from different parts of Uttar Pradesh to Kisan Ghat, the former Prime Minister and farmers leader Chowdhary Charan Singh's memorial, were prevented from entering Delhi.
Earlier in the day, a large number of farmers assembled in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and started marching towards Delhi in support of their demands including payment of sugarcane crop dues, complete loan waiver and cut in electricity charges.
The farmers protest march, which was organised by the Bharatiya Kisan Sangathan (BKS), started from UP's Saharanpur on September 11.
