Blaming the Narendra Modi regime for the current economic slowdown, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday said had Congress' 'Nyay Scheme' been implemented before elections, the country would not have plunged into this economic quagmire.
While addressing an election rally, here, Mr Gandhi said the Congress party, before elections, had brought this Nyay Yojana to revive economy, as the party knows, to make economy strong, it is necessary to put money in the pockets of the poor, farmers and labourers.
Haryana and Maharashtra are going for the polls on October 21 along with bypolls in 51 seats in 17 states.
Mr Gandhi stressed that if the Congress had won the Lok Sabha elections, the money by this scheme would have gone directly to the bank accounts of the poor, farmers, labourers among others and the people would not have been suffering, unlike now.
"From 2004 to 2014, there was a Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in the country and during that period our economy grew rapidly as Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA) was implemented and the farm loans were waived", Mr Gandhi said.
The Congress leader pointed out that it is because of MNREGA, nearly Rs 35,000 crore reached the poor people and the farmers were benefited with around Rs 70,000 crore.
"This increased their purchasing power, but after becoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in five years, withdrew this money of farmers, labourers and poor by implementing demonetisation and finally gave it to some billionaires", he charged.
Taking to twitter, Mr Gandhi also alleged that the current situation of the country and especially rural India has deteriorated due to economic disruption and despite that government has no plans to overcome these crisis.
"Rural India is in severe distress. The economy has sunk and the government is clueless about what to do", he tweeted.
Mr Gandhi believes that the reason for the economic downturn is the policies of the Modi government, said that this government does not have plans to come out of the situation of recession, so it should take support of the Congress.
"To deal with the recession, the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister should take help of the Congress manifesto in which the situation has been forecast and the measures are given to deal with it", Mr Gandhi added.
Along with this, he has also posted a news saying that rural consumption generally increases faster than urban consumption but this quarter report is the opposite.
Rural consumption is the lowest in seven years in the September quarter.
