New Delhi, Nov 22 : The Rajya Sabha on Friday witnessed uproar over the JNU issue following which the Chairman asked members to follow the rules of the House.
Chairman Venkaiah Naidu told the members that zero hour is to raise critical issues. "When you do not follow the rules how can discussion over serious issues can happen," Mr Naidu quipped.
CPI member KK Ragesh raised the issue of JNU students being 'brutally beaten up' by the Delhi Police here when they were carrying out peaceful march to Parliament House from their campus.
" Is there no freedom of speech? Is there no freedom of association? Is there no freedom of assembly? The why civil liberty is denied to the JNU Students. Why there is an emergency kind of situation in the campus', Mr Ragesh asked.
The member demanded judicial inquiry into the police action.
BJP member Prabhat Jha said that JNU has a great history. It is an institution which gave personalities like Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, but he wants to know why Statue of Swami Vivekananda inside JNU was vandalised by miscreants.
As soon as Mr Jha questioned why there is no probe against people who wrote 'Bhagwa jalega (saffron will burn)' in red paint at the platform where the statue of Swami Vivekananda, opposition members started protests.
Huge uproar started in the House forcing the Chairman to ask the members to follow the rules of the House.
The Chairman told the members that it is the House of Elders and all need to follow rules, decorum and decency.
