Hitting back at the BJP, the former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday asserted that he will not appologise for his 'rape in India' remark and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should appologise for 'burning the Northeast' and for remarks as Delhi is 'rape capital'.
"There is no question of apology. I have a clip on my phone in which Narendra Modi ji is calling Delhi a 'rape capital', will tweet it so that everyone can see. What they are doing is to deflect attention from protests in North East, This is being made an issue by BJP", Mr Gandhi said outside Parliament moments after the Lower House witnessed uproar over his statement.
On Thursday, while speaking in an election rally in Jharkhand, the former Congress president had lashed out at the BJP and Mr Modi and had said, "Narendra Modi had said 'Make in India' but nowadays wherever you look, it is 'Rape in India'. In Uttar Pradesh's Unnao, Narendra Modi's MLA raped a woman, then she met with an accident but Narendra Modi did not utter a word.”
Clarifying his statement, Mr Gandhi said, "all I said was that Prime Minister keeps talking about Make India, but we open newspapers, all we see is about rape in India. There are news of rapes from every BJP ruled states".
"There is no question of apology", he said and added that, "this is merely an excuse to divert attention from the main issue in front of us right now, the citizenship law, and nothing else".
Moments after his response, Mr Gandhi has posted a video clip of Mr Modi in twitter, where he can be seen saying that Delhi as the rape capital. In tweet, Mr Rahul demanded Mr Modi's apology "for burning the Northeast", "destroying India's economy" and for calling Delhi a rape capital.
Mr Gandhi also said that "Modi uses violence. There is violence against women, violence in North East, violence in Kashmir."
Earlier in the day, in the Lok Sabha the BJP had attacked Mr Gandhi over his statement and demanded his apology.
Union Minister Smriti Irani had alleged that it’s happened for the first time in history of India that Gandhi family's son is saying “come and rape women in India," adding that Rahul Gandhi should be punished.
