Terming it as political witch-hunt, the summons issued to him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the land deal in Rajasthan, Robert Vadra, the brother-in-law of Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that the central government was trying to tarnish his reputation and dignity.
The businessman, who married UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s daughter Priyanka Gandhi, reacted through a Facebook post, a day after the Enforcement Directorate summoned him in an alleged land scam in Bikaner district of Rajasthan.
“This is nothing but a politically motivated, malicious and baseless prosecution. The truth will prevail some day. It always does”, Mr Vadra said.
He said he is a victim of political witch-hunt with government departments operating on an agenda to besmirch his dignity and reputation.
“I have cooperated fully with them for the last 4.5 years. I will continue to do so”, the 49 year old businessman said.
The probe agency registered a case after Rajasthan police filed several FIR and chargesheet on the basis of a complaint filed by local Tehsildar, about alleged forgery in the allotment of land in Bikaner, a place considered sensitive due to its proximity to the India-Pakistan border.
Mr Vadra said, he and his lawyer handed over all the documents related to the land deal when the probe agency summoned him earlier.
“On the last occasion they summoned me for documents, my lawyer sat there for three hours and handed over an exhaustive set of documents” and added that “it is strange that I was asked for the very same documents once again even though they had already been furnished over the last few years.
“ In fact it is even stranger that I was sent another summons within 24 hours without the agency even perusing the latest set of 600 documents supplied to them:”, he said.
He also alleged that the present government used his case as an opportunity to get political mileage and pointed out that his lawyer has been compelled to appear in Jaipur once more on Wednesday..
“No surprise that this is just two days before the polling in Rajasthan”, he said.
Mr Vadra said that authorities know perfectly well that there is no case to proceed against him and “they merely want to create another media circus to distract the public”.
