Leader of Opposition in Parliament Rahul Gandhi has alleged that drugs and alcohol menace is rampant in dry Gujarat. Gandhi said during the Congress’ Jan Aakrosh Yatra, the party had found out that youth in Gujarat are being pushed towards drugs and crime.
“During the Congress’s ongoing Jan Aakrosh Yatras in Gujarat, people—especially women—have repeatedly stated that the rising menace of drugs, illegal liquor, and crime has deepened the sense of insecurity in their lives. Gujarat is the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, where traditions of truth, morality, and justice have prevailed, but over the past few years, the future of the state’s youth is being pushed toward the dark world of drugs and crime,” he said.
He further alleged that criminals were being shielded by BJP ministers and that is why women were protesting in large numbers. “Gujarat is asking—why is the BJP government silent? Which BJP minister is providing cover for all this? Why are Gujarat’s traitors being shielded,” he asked.
He further indicated that the BJP was employing double-standards when dealing with farmers’ relief packages. “The recent devastating floods have ruined thousands of Gujarati families and destroyed farmers’ crops. When Modi ji was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, talk of relief packages never stopped. Today, Gujarat is drowning, there’s a double-engine government, they are the Prime Minister, yet neither adequate relief is in sight nor any empathy,” the Congress leader posted on X.
The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) started the statewide ‘Jan Akrosh Yatra’ beginning November 21 to highlight the concerns of farmers, students, youth, women, small businesses and marginalised groups.
The yatra, which will start from Dhima in North Gujarat, will traverse seven districts, 40 talukas and 12 cities in its first phase. This leg of the campaign will span 1,100 km and conclude at the Becharaji Temple in Mehsana district on December 3.
The first phase of the route includes Dharnidhar, Tharad, Lakhni, Dhanera, Deesa, Dantiwada, Palanpur, Amirgarh, Vadgam, Ambaji, Kheroj, Khedbrahma, Wadali, Idar, Himmatnagar, Prantij, Rajendrachokdi, Shamlaji, Meghraj, Sathamba, Malpur, Bayad, Dhansura, Dehgam, Chiloda, Gandhinagar, Mansa, Bijapur, Mehsana, Visnagar, Unjha, Kheralu, Siddhpur, Saraswati, Patan, Harij, Radhanpur, Shankheshwar and Bechraji.
