Hotels in Assam's Barak Valley have declared that they will not accommodate any citizens of Bangladesh until the neighbouring country's attacks on Hindus and other minorities cease.
A 129-kilometer border separates the Barak Valley, which includes the districts of Cachar, Sribhumi (previously Karimganj), and Hailakandi, from the Sylhet region of Bangladesh. "The situation of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh is concerning. We cannot accept this in any way. We have, therefore, decided to stop hosting any national from that country in all three districts of Barak Valley until the situation improves and atrocities on the Hindus stop. This is our form of protest," Barak Valley Hotel and Restaurant Association president Babul Rai said in a conversation with reporters on Friday.
"The people of Bangladesh must ensure that stability returns to the country. Only if the situation improves, we can reconsider our decision," he added. Bajrang Dal asked a few days ago that two booths selling Bangladeshi goods be taken down from the organisers of a worldwide expo that was taking place in Silchar as a protest against the crimes committed against Hindus in the neighbouring nation. Their demand was granted.
Protesters from the Bajrang Dal had also visited the Bangladesh Visa Center in Silchar and called for the signboard to stop using the word "Bangladesh." The arrest of Hindu monk Chinmaya Krishna Das and the alleged atrocities committed against minorities in Bangladesh have sparked massive protests in all three of the Barak Valley's districts.
