New Delhi: The Bihar Minority Commission on Friday wrote to the Madhubani District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, seeking strict action against those who brutally assaulted a Muslim labourer after falsely accusing him of being Bangladeshi.
The incident took place on December 30, when the victim, Nurshed Alam, also known as Murshid Alam, was allegedly attacked by a mob. He was beaten, paraded for nearly 2–3 kilometres, and forced to chant religious slogans including “Jai Shri Ram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.” A video of the assault later went viral on social media, showing a man repeatedly striking Alam on the face with a hard object. In the footage, Alam is seen lying on the ground with folded hands, bleeding from his mouth and nose, while the attacker hurls religious slurs and accuses him of having mobile numbers from Bangladesh and Pakistan.
In its letter to the district administration, the Minority Commission stated: “It is requested that an FIR be registered against all those involved in the said mob lynching incident under the appropriate sections, their immediate arrest be carried out, strict punitive action be taken against them in the light of the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s guidelines, and financial assistance be provided to the victim’s family in accordance with the Bihar Government circular. The Commission may kindly be informed of the action taken.”
Ghulam Rasool Balyawi, Chairman of the Bihar Minority Commission, said a horrific and cruel mob attack on a Muslim labourer had come to light in Tichka village under the Rajnagar police station area of Madhubani district, creating fear and terror across the region.
According to Balyawi, Mohammad Murshid Alam, a resident of Shankarpur village under the Bhimpur police station area in Supaul district, was working as a labourer on a government drain construction project in Ward No. 44 of Madhubani district. He had been living in a rented house in the Rahmatganj area.
“It is reported that on December 30, 2025, antisocial elements from Tichka village targeted him by forcibly labelling him a ‘Bangladeshi’. The attackers allegedly raised religious slogans, pulled his beard, insulted his religious identity, and brutally beat him with the intention to kill. An organised mob of approximately 50 people openly challenged the law and carried out this violent act, leaving the victim seriously injured. His condition is reported to be critical,” Balyawi said.
The Commission Chairman has directed that appropriate financial assistance be provided to the victim’s family in accordance with the Bihar government’s circular, and that a written report detailing the action taken be submitted to the Commission.
“This incident raises a serious question mark over the safety of minorities and the rule of law in the state, which cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. The Commission has declared swift and effective action in this case to be mandatory,” he added.
Meanwhile, the police have clarified that no objectionable material, including any Pakistani or Bangladeshi mobile numbers, was found on the victim’s phone. An FIR has been registered under charges of attempt to murder, and two accused have been identified, though no arrests had been made as of Friday.
“The victim’s mobile is in police custody and no such thing has been found. This is a case of complete hooliganism by the accused. We will arrest them under strict charges and ensure severe punishment. Even in the future, if anyone dares to commit such acts, the police will not spare them,” a police officer said.
