Rahul Gandhi, while speaking in the Lok Sabha after days of logjam, attacked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government over the recently finalised trade deal with the United States and said the government should be ashamed of the same. Launching a scathing attack, Gandhi said Centre "sold India", adding that by allowing US goods to enter, the government endangered the livelihoods of farmers.
"You have sold India. Are you not ashamed of selling India? You have sold our mother, Bharat Mata," he said while referring to the trade agreement.
He further said that it was a "wholesale surrender" with India's energy security handed over to America and farmers' interests compromised. Gandhi added that had an INDIA Bloc government negotiated the trade agreement with the US, it would have told Donald Trump that he should treat India as an equal.
"This is complete surrender. It is a tragedy because it is a surrender not just of the Prime Minister. He has surrendered the future of 1.5 billion Indians. He has surrendered the future because he wants to protect the BJP's financial architecture on which there is a case in the United States," Gandhi said.
Gandhi said the interests of the farmers have been compromised, and the farmers are facing a "storm" as agricultural products from the US will flood Indian markets. He also alleged that the Indian textile industry is "finished".
"We are heading into turbulent times and the nation has been sold. The nation has been sold out. Its data has been sold and its farmers have been sold," Gandhi reiterated while concluding his speech.
BJP HITS BACK AT RAHUL GANDHI
After Rahul Gandhi’s speech ended, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said no one can sell India and accused the Congress party of weakening the country. He asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the strongest PM of India and said, “Congress is sad because India is progressing."
He alleged that the Congress MP makes speeches in Parliament filled with lies and baseless allegations before walking out. “He never stays back to listen to the minister’s reply,” Rijiju said.
"It is very unfortunate that we don't have a very serious nature or a person with a serious character befitting the position of the leader of the opposition. Our party has taken a stand that we will counter Rahul Gandhi's lies outside, but inside the House, a notice will be issued. We will serve the notice to the Speaker. Rahul Gandhi has promised that he will authenticate, but I know he cannot authenticate because he lied. He lied on the house," the minister said.
Within minutes of Gandhi’s speech, the BJP launched a sharp counterattack, accusing him of dragging politics and parliamentary decorum to a new low and making baseless allegations.
“Parliament has long been regarded as a symbol of the highest democratic standards. However, today, through the conduct, language and style of the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, a highly condemnable attempt was made to drag politics and parliamentary decorum to the lowest level,” the spokesperson said.
