US President Donald Trump said Monday that the conflict with Iran would end soon, asserting that the military campaign carried out alongside Israel had already achieved its key goals.
"It's going to be ended soon, and if it starts up again they'll be hit even harder," Trump said during a news conference in Florida, though he did not provide a specific timeline for when the fighting might stop.
The US leader suggested the operation had already delivered its intended results, arguing that the strikes had significantly weakened Iran and forced it into a difficult position. Trump’s remarks came amid continuing tensions in the region and global concern about the potential for further escalation.
During the briefing, Trump also issued a warning to Tehran over the global oil supply, saying the United States would respond forcefully if Iran attempted to disrupt the movement of crude. Energy markets have been on edge since the war began, with prices rising sharply amid fears that supplies could be affected.
"I will not allow a regime to hold the world hostage and attempt to stop the globe's oil supply. And if Iran does anything to do that, they'll get hit at a much, much harder level," he said.
The president’s comments come as oil prices have surged due to the conflict, driven in part by disruptions to maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage used for a significant portion of global crude shipments.
Trump has also faced growing pressure to address rising fuel prices at home, as higher gasoline costs begin to affect consumers ahead of the US midterm elections later this year.
At the same time, he indicated that Washington could temporarily ease certain oil-related sanctions to help bring down prices while the conflict continues.
"We're also waiving certain oil-related sanctions to reduce prices," Trump said, adding, "We're going to take those sanctions off till this straightens out."
