Giving a clarion call to remove the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power in next year’s Lok Sabha election, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday asserted that it would a fitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi as 2024 marks the centenary of Gandhiji’s election as Congress president.
A resolution passed by the extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) in Hyderabad, where Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chiefs and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leaders participated, stated that the people of the country were looking for a change.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Kharge noted that the foundation of democracy and the Constitution was laid by the party and therefore the responsibility to protect it also lies with them.
The deliberations on the second day of the extended CWC meeting mainly focused on the Lok Sabha poll and the Assembly elections to five States — Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram.
In a one-page resolution, the CWC expressed confidence that the Congress would receive a “decisive mandate” in these States.
On the party’s preparedness for the Lok Sabha election expected in April-May, the resolution said, “The Congress party is fully ready for the battle ahead. It is confident that the people of our country are wanting change. We will fulfill their expectations of law and order, freedom, social and economic justice, equality and equity”.
Addressing 147 participants, Mr. Kharge stressed on the need to maintain inner party discipline and urged leaders to work unitedly by “shunning their egos”.
Referring to the recent Congress victories in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, Mr. Kharge claimed that these results reflected the mood for change among people.
“This is not the time for us to rest. In the last 10 years under BJP rule, the challenges faced by ordinary people have multiplied. The Prime Minister refuses to address the concerns of the poor, farmers, labourers, women, and youth; instead, he cannot look beyond himself,” alleged the Congress chief.
“In such circumstances, we cannot remain mute spectators. We must unite and overthrow this dictatorial government in order to save our democracy,” Mr. Kharge added.
The Congress chief also hailed the party governments in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh for launching new models of welfare schemes and social justice. “We must publicise these welfare schemes across country,” he said.
