Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday stepped up his attack on the Modi government, alleging that its economic policies have driven up the cost of essential goods and services, increasing the burden on ordinary citizens.
In a post on X, Kharge said the government has “severely damaged the country’s strategic and economic policies,” adding that the consequences are being felt by “1.4 billion Indians.” He claimed that prices of several daily essentials are set to rise from today, impacting households as well as small businesses.
Pointing to specific areas, Kharge highlighted a sharp increase in commercial LPG cylinder prices and alleged shortages. “From tea at roadside eateries to mid-day meals, everything will be adversely affected,” he said, suggesting the impact would extend to both informal food services and welfare programmes.
He also raised concerns over rising air turbine fuel prices, arguing that it would make flying less affordable. “Air travel has become unaffordable, even for those who once relied on budget flying,” Kharge said, while criticising the removal of price caps.
The Congress leader further claimed that more than 900 essential medicines have seen price hikes, which could strain healthcare access. “The cost of treatment has increased further,” he said, noting that coronary stent prices have also gone up.
Kharge criticised increased toll taxes, terming the situation “highway robbery,” and pointed to a reported 34 per cent rise in Speed Post charges. He added that higher costs of materials such as plastic goods, steel and ceramics could have a wider economic impact. “PVC pipes used by farmers have become costlier, bitumen prices have risen by up to 50%, and the construction sector is under significant pressure,” he said.
Accusing the BJP of overlooking the struggles of key sections, Kharge said, “At a time when the common people, farmers, workers and MSME industries are struggling and hoping for relief, the BJP leadership is ignoring them and focusing instead on exploiting the public and profiteering during difficult times.”
His remarks come amid continuing political sparring over inflation and rising living costs. Opposition leaders have repeatedly flagged the issue, while the government maintains that its policies are aimed at ensuring macroeconomic stability, controlling inflation, and sustaining long-term growth.
