LUCKNOW: Following the demise of five individuals during demonstrations opposing the survey of Sambhal's Jama Masjid on Sunday, the president of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Maulana Mahmood Madani beseeched Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to halt the escalating conspiracy aimed at fomenting communal tension under the pretext of mosque surveys.
Maulana Madani stated, "Activities undertaken under the guise of surveys have culminated in mistrust and unrest in numerous regions, including Sambhal, disrupting public tranquility and communal harmony. These occurrences are perceived as a direct threat to the secular fabric of the nation."
In a communiqué issued by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, it articulated that the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, was instituted with the noble objective of ensuring communal amity and averting conflicts over places of worship, however, recent developments, particularly the Supreme Court's observation that surveys are not prohibited under the Act, have inadvertently furnished a pretext for certain groups to foment discord.
"The misappropriation of such surveys harbours the potential to destabilise the social harmony that we have meticulously cultivated since independence. These actions are being weaponised to engender division and imperil public order," Madani asserted.
He implored the apex court to take suo motu cognisance of the matter and urged it to act decisively to prevent further escalation of communal tensions, thereby preserving the spirit of the 1991 Act and the rule of law.
"The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind maintains that proactive judicial intervention at this juncture is imperative to prevent widespread violence and safeguard the unity and integrity of the nation. We anticipate that the judiciary will reaffirm its commitment to justice and social harmony through timely intervention," added Madani.
