Citizens for Fraternity, a group of eminent Muslim citizens including Najeeb Jung, former Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, S.Y. Qureshi, former Chief Election Commissioner of India, Lt. Gen.(Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah (retired), Shahid Siddiqui, former MP and Saeed Sherwani have written an open letter to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat praising his recent statement on the need to end the Mandir-Masjid dispute.
The members wrote "We are extremely pleased with your views. Your statement is a reason for hope not only for Indian Muslims but for all people of goodwill across the country and the world." Referring to Mohan Bhagwat's statement in Pune, the letter described it as reducing the communal tension prevailing in the society and promoting an atmosphere of unity.
The letter expressed deep concern over the divisive statements and incidents made by a section of the society in recent times against Indian Muslims. Terming these incidents as harmful to the social fabric of the country, the members said that such incidents cause serious communal tension.
Members of Citizens for Fraternity wrote, "Your statement will prove to be a guide for those who are attacking the foundation of our country." They hoped that this statement of the RSS chief would help stop the forces from spreading hatred and reverting to an atmosphere of peace and harmony.
In the letter, Citizens for Fraternity emphasized that it is the responsibility of all citizens to strengthen the Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb and the secular foundation of India. They requested Bhagwat to take steps to put his words on the ground and promote unity and brotherhood in the society.
This letter is being seen as an important initiative, in which an appeal has been made to increase mutual understanding and harmony among the Muslims and other communities of the country. This step of the members of Citizens for Fraternity is an effort in a positive direction for the social unity and peace of the country.
It is hoped that this dialogue will strengthen the social and cultural fabric of the country and inspire us to create an India that makes every Indian feel proud.
