Former Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla has been appointed as the Governor of Manipur, an official notification said on Tuesday. Bhalla's appointment has come at a time when Manipur is reeling under a resurgence in ethnic violence that has rocked the state since May 2023.
Ajay Kumar Bhalla will replace Lakashman Prasad Acharya, who assumed the office on July 31 this year, as Manipur Governor.
Bhalla is a retired IAS officer of the 1984 batch of Assam-Meghalaya cadre. He served as Home Secretary of India for around five years till August 2024. Ajay Kumar Bhalla hails from Jalandhar in Punjab.
Also, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, who has often been seen at loggerheads with the state government over a range of issues, has been appointed as the Governor of Bihar.
Meanwhile, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who held the highest office in Bihar, has been made the Kerala Governor.
President Droupadi Murmu approved the appointments. She also accepted the resignation of Raghbuar Das as the Governor of Odisha and appointed Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati in his place. Dr Kambhampati was the Governor of Mizoram before this.
Former Army Chief, General Dr Vijay Kumar Singh has been appointed as Mizoram Governor and will succeed Dr Kambhampati in office. This is the first time General VK Singh will be discharging his duties as the Governor of a state.
Singh was an MP from Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad from 2014-2024 and a Union minister in the previous Cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The appointments will take effect from the dates the Governors assume charge of their respective offices.
