The White House has announced that 25% tariffs will be imposed on Canada and Mexico on Saturday, blaming the countries, along with China, for "tens of millions" of fentanyl deaths in America.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also announced during a press conference on Friday that a 10% Tariff will also be imposed on China.
In response to these Tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that his government will be ready with "a purposeful, forceful, but reasonable, immediate response."
"It's not what we want. But if he moves forward, we will also act", stated Trudeau on Friday.
US President Donald Trump had previously announced the February 1st deadline for the tariffs on January 20th this year.
In a social media post on Thursday, Trump also threatened BRICS member states with 100% tariffs if they were to attempt to replace the US Dollar. This is even though some BRICS states, such as Iran and Russia are already under US sanctions.
Leavitt stated that the reason for the tariffs was the countries' failure to stop the smuggling of fentanyl into the US.
The Press secretary claimed that the fentanyl coming into the US from the 3 countries has led to "tens of millions of American deaths."
However, statistics from the US Center for Disease Control show the overall number of deaths in America due to fentanyl to be under 2 million.
