Bharatiya Janata Party MP Anurag Thakur on Wednesday launched a blistering attack on the opposition parties, accusing them of compromising the Constitution for vote bank.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha over a debate on the controversial Waqf Amendment Bill, Thakur said the existing law has become a base of atrocity and corruption.
“This is neither Pakistan nor the Taliban's country. Only one law will run in the country—the Constitution. Today we won't let another destruction (by the Opposition) in the name of land 'jihad'," he said.
The former Union minister also noted that in several countries the Waqf board works under the centralised framework.
"This bill is not about Hindu vs Muslim, this is about law vs lawlessness, Constitution vs corruption, Bharat vs internal partition,” he said, adding that the Waqf bill will be the last nail in the Coffin of Congress's politics of appeasement.
Thakur claimed that the amendment in the Waqf law also seeks to curb corruption, while raking up an alleged scam in Karnataka.
"The Karnataka government collected 4.50 crore, where do you spend that money? You should give the answers. Did you take the money from the Masjid or the Waqf board?," he asked.
The MP claimed that several organisations like Catholic Bishops Conference of India, Church of Bharat, Kerala Council of Churches and Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council, All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council and Muslim Rashtriya Manch had supported the bill.
“I thank them for this. It is time to amend the Waqf because this has become a base of atrocity and corruption. India needs liberation from the fear of Waqf because the Waqf law formed during the Congress regime meant 'khaata na bahi, jo Waqf kahe wahi sahi'…,” said the BJP MP.
Earlier in the day, Union Minority Affairs Minister Rijiju tabled the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabh. The Bill seeks to improve the functioning of Waqf properties, address complexities, ensure transparency and introduce technology-driven management.
