A Chandausi court in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh is set to hear a plea seeking ban on offering prayers at Shahi Jama Masjid claimed to be a temple on July 21.
The petition alleges that since the masjid is a disputed land, the prayers should be banned. Earlier, the Allahabad High Court had rejected a petition filed by the masjid committee paving the way for another survey. On May 19, the high court upheld the trial court’s decision and ordered that the proceeding should continue.
Civil judge (Senior Division) Aditya Singh acknowledged the petition submitted by Simran Gupta. The court also requested the court that the mosque should be sealed and placed under the custody of the Sambhal District Magistrate.
The original suit was a filed on November 1920 by 8 Hindu petitioners including advocate Hari Shankar Jain and Vishnu Shankar Jain other same day the court directed a survey of the mosque premises second round of the survey was conducted on November 24 following which the matter was brought before the Chandausi Civil Court the most recent hearing to place on April 28.
Advocate Shri Gopal Sharma representing The Hindu side told PTI that the high courts order rejecting the play by the Muslim side had beam submitted in court as part of the official record mean while advocate hasim Jamal appearing for the Shahi Jama Masjid confirmed that the opposing counsel had submitted the High Court’s ruling and stated that the mosque’s legal team would comply with any directive issued by the court. Advocate Babu Lal Saxena who filed the petition seeking a stay on namaz at the site told PTI that his client Gupta believes that all religious activities at the disputed sites should be suspended until the final verdict is delivered.
During the second survey at the mosque, violent clashes erupted on November 24 leaving the deaths of 4 individuals and injuries to at least 29 police personnels. Following the classes 96 people including Zafar Ali and several advocates have been sent to Jail in connection with the incident.
