US President Donald Trump admitted he was “not happy” with the outcome, conceding he “didn't make any progress” with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over the Ukraine war.
"No, I didn't make any progress with him today at all," Trump told reporters when asked about his "pretty long call" with Putin earlier in the day. Noting that he had discussed Iran and Ukraine in the conversation, he said, "And I'm not happy about that, I'm not happy."
Meanwhile, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said that Trump "again raised the question of the quick end to the military action.”
Instead, the conversation shifted to economic cooperation, including joint projects in energy and space—highlighting a disconnect between stated diplomatic goals and actual outcomes.
After Russia dismissed US proposals, Trump suggested in June it might be better to allow the fighting to continue “for a while” before intervening—casting doubt on the urgency behind his earlier vow.
Moscow has reportedly refused to agree to a US-proposed peace agreement with Ukraine, saying "Russia will not give up on these aims" to get rid of the “root-causes” of the conflict.
The Kremlin has demanded that Ukraine cede territories whose populations voted to become part of Russia. It also wants Ukraine to embrace neutrality and abandon its desire to join NATO.
“Vladimir Putin, for his part, answered that we are continuing to try to search for a politically negotiated solution to the conflict,” the Russian official said.
The diplomatic back-and-forth comes as low stockpiles have prompted the US to pause shipments of certain critical weapons to Ukraine.
The Pentagon's decision has reportedly resulted in reduced deliveries of Patriot defense missiles, which Ukraine depends on to intercept Russian missiles.
"And we're working with them and trying to help them, but we haven't (completely stopped). You know, Biden emptied out our whole country giving them weapons, and we have to make sure that we have enough for ourselves," Trump said.
Trump has faced increased pressure, including from some Republicans, to apply more pressure on Putin and push Russia toward an agreement. The only tangible outcome was limited to humanitarian exchanges between Russia and Ukraine—far from the sweeping peace deal Trump had promised.
Within hours of the call’s conclusion, Russia launched a drone attack on Kiev. Ukraine launched an attack of the same nature afterward near Moscow, leaving swaths of the area without electricity.
