Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces an ICC arrest warrant, has asked for US President Donald Trump to get a Nobel Peace Prize after the two sides launched a 12-day aggression on Iranian soil amid a long-running genocidal war against Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu made the announcement while speaking to reporters at the beginning of a dinner between US and Israeli officials on Monday, handing Trump a nomination letter he said he had sent to the Nobel committee.
“I want to express the appreciation and admiration not only of all Israelis, but of the Jewish people and many, many admirers around the world for your leadership… your leadership of a just cause and the pursuit of peace and security, which you are leading in many lands but now, especially in the Middle East,” the Israeli prime minister claimed.
“The president has an extraordinary team, and I think our teams together make an extraordinary combination to meet challenges and seize opportunities… So, I want to present to you, Mr. President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize Committee. It's nominating you for the Peace Prize, which is well-deserved, and you should get it.”
Receiving the nomination letter, Trump told Netanyahu, “Coming from you in particular, this is very meaningful.”
The US president went on to say, “We've worked together for a long time and we've done well together. We say it's a lot of work, but we had a great result recently and we're going to have a lot of great results.”
The nomination bid follows years of pressure from the Israeli regime on Trump and his predecessors to take military action against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
Trump ordered US forces to deploy bunker-buster bombs and launch a barrage of Tomahawk missiles on the three key Iranian nuclear sites of Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan on June 22, after more than a week of Israeli aggression on Iran’s military and civilian infrastructure that claimed hundreds of lives, including women and children as well as a dozen top military brass.
In response, the Iranian Armed Forces, led by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), launched a powerful and unprecedented retaliatory campaign, Operation True Promise III, against the Israeli regime by targeting key military, intelligence, industrial, energy, and R&D facilities across the occupied territories.
The Israeli regime was forced on June 24 to declare a unilateral halt to its aggression, which was announced on its behalf by the US president.
'Better future'
Accompanied by their senior advisers for a dinner in the White House Blue Room on Monday, Trump and Netanyahu also discussed the war in Gaza and the push for a 60-day ceasefire proposal to pause the conflict.
Netanyahu said the United States and Israel were working with other countries, claiming that they would give Palestinians a "better future" by moving the residents of Gaza to neighboring nations.
"If people want to stay, they can stay, but if they want to leave, they should be able to leave," the Israeli prime minister said.
"We're working with the United States very closely about finding countries that will seek to realize what they always say, that they wanted to give the Palestinians a better future. I think we're getting close to finding several countries."
Rights groups and Palestinian officials have condemned such forced displacement as collective punishment and part of Israel’s ongoing genocidal war on Gaza.
Virtually 90% of the population of the Gaza Strip has been displaced at least once since October 2023, when Israel launched its aggression against Gaza.
The occupying regime has killed more than 57,500 Palestinians there so far, according to the health ministry of Gaza.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu and his former minister of military affairs, Yoav Gallant, for crimes against humanity and war crimes related to Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
