In a significant step towards preserving Uttar Pradesh’s rich historical legacy, the Yogi Adityanath government has launched an initiative to breathe new life into heritage structures that are slowly falling into ruins. The Tourism Department is set to rejuvenate 11 ancient forts and buildings under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Under this framework, private agencies will be responsible for designing, developing, investing in, operating, and eventually handing over the restored sites to the government.
Officials here on Sunday said this initiative aims not only to conserve the architectural and cultural history of the state, but also to enhance tourism and generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities for thousands.
The 11 heritage sites identified for transformation include Talbehat Fort (Lalitpur), Rangarh and Bhuragarh Fort (Banda), Wazirganj Baradari (Gonda), Alambagh Bhawan, Gulistan-e-Eram, and Darshan Vilas (Lucknow), Tikait Rai Baradari (Kanpur), Mastani Mahal and Senapati Mahal (Mahoba), Tahrauli Fort (Jhansi), and Sitaram Mahal/Kotwan Fort (Mathura).
Known for their unique architecture and historical significance, these sites will be developed into heritage hotels, cultural centers, or museums, offering immersive experiences for tourists.
This move is particularly promising for regions like Bundelkhand, where heritage-driven tourism can provide a major boost to the local economy. The Yogi government’s heritage revival plan is part of a broader strategy to balance cultural preservation with modern development. According to the Tourism Department, the project will not only restore these architectural treasures but also unlock new avenues for local livelihoods.
This effort complements the Chief Minister’s ongoing initiatives to promote eco-tourism and religious tourism, which have already placed Uttar Pradesh prominently on the national and global tourism map. With the successful development of destinations such as Ayodhya, Kashi, and Mathura, and several ancient temples and pilgrimage centers, the state has witnessed a tourism boom. In 2024 alone, Uttar Pradesh recorded an impressive tourist footfall of 65 crore, underscoring the growing success of these visionary policies.
