Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff measures and declared that he would not take orders from any foreign leader regarding tariffs.
Lula described the U.S. threats of tariffs as “unacceptable extortion” and announced Brazil’s readiness to respond reciprocally.
This statement came in response to the recent announcement of a 50 percent U.S. tariff on Brazilian goods scheduled to begin in August.
Trump linked these tariffs to Brazil’s treatment of former president Jair Bolsonaro-often referred to as “the Trump of Brazil”-as well as what he called unfair trade practices against American companies.
The tariff announcement followed Lula’s earlier remarks labeling Trump as an ”empire” that the world does not want.
