Israel’s genocidal war has killed at least 60,034 Palestinians, mostly women and children, across the besieged Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Gaza Health Ministry said that the number of injured was 145,870, while thousands remain missing under the rubble of destroyed buildings and areas.
The ministry further said that most of those killed were civilians.
The grim milestone was reached on Tuesday, when at least 62 Palestinians, including 19 aid seekers, were killed since dawn in Israeli attacks across Gaza despite what the regime has described as “pauses” to deliver aid.
The attacks continue as United Nations experts warned that the “worst-case scenario of famine” is unfolding in the besieged territory, where forced starvation and malnutrition are driving a rise in hunger-related deaths among the Palestinians there.
Earlier this year, research published in the Lancet medical journal estimated that the death toll in Gaza was about 40% higher than numbers recorded by the Palestinian Health Ministry.
The study published in The Lancet reviewed hospital records, online civilian death submissions, and an independently compiled list based on social media obituaries and death announcements.
By comparing the three lists, researchers concluded that the number of people killed in Gaza was significantly higher than the figure reported by authorities in the besieged Palestinian territory.
In a separate development on Tuesday, Palestinian health officials warned that hundreds of people could die as hospitals were overwhelmed with patients experiencing dizziness and exhaustion amid a breakdown in aid deliveries.
Food crisis experts have been warning of a famine in Gaza amid genocidal war and an all-out Israeli blockade.
Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, recently said that its staff, as well as doctors and humanitarian workers in Gaza, were experiencing fainting spells due to hunger and exhaustion.
The United Nations says Israel’s relentless air and ground campaign has leveled entire neighborhoods in Gaza, displaced most of the population of 2.3 million, and pushed the besieged Palestinian region to the brink of famine.
This is while global aid agencies have sounded an alarm about the collapse of essential services and the rampant outbreak of diseases across the coastal enclave.
Gaza lies in ruins after more than 21 months of Israel's genocidal campaign, raising concerns about worsening starvation.
Israel's brutal war has drawn international condemnation and calls for an immediate ceasefire, even by Israel’s closest Western allies.
Tensions escalated between Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof on Monday, following the issuance of a strongly worded statement by the Netherlands, which proposed European punitive measures against Israel in response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Observers say Israeli policy in Gaza is using starvation as a weapon of war, with regime officials openly advocating blockade tactics to displace, kill, and exterminate Palestinians.
