United States President Donald Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Cambodia. With this, Cambodia becomes the third country to back Trump's demand for a Nobel Peace Prize after Pakistan and Israel.
Cambodia's prime minister, Hun Manet, said that he has nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. He lauded his "extraordinary statesmanship" in halting a border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. The nomination was expected following the country's deputy prime minister's last week announcement. He had also thanked Trump for cutting down from the tariff from 49 per cent to 19 per cent.
Hun Manet made the announcement in a Facebook post late on Thursday, accompanied by a letter he said had been sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee hailing Trump's intervention as an example of his "exceptional achievements in de-escalating tensions in some of the world's most volatile regions".
"This timely intervention, which averted a potentially devastating conflict, was vital in preventing a great loss of lives and paved the way towards the restoration of peace," the Cambodian leader wrote in the letter.
It is said that a call by Trump on July 26 helped leaders of Thailand and Cambodia to break the deadlock after days of intense border fight, followed by a ceasefire on July 28. In total, 43 people were killed and more than 300,000 displaced by a five-day conflict.
On several occasions, Trump has claimed that he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for his "efforts" in resolving global conflicts. Earlier this month, the White House also backed his demand. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump has ended six conflicts, including those between Israel and Iran and India and Pakistan, adding that “it is well past time that Trump should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize”.
“President Trump has now ended conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia,” Karoline Leavitt said. "President Trump has brokered on average about one peace deal or ceasefire per month during his six months in office. It’s well past time that President Trump was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize," she added.
Earlier, Trump had said, "They should give me the Nobel Prize for Rwanda, and if you look at Congo, or you could say Serbia, Kosovo, you could say a lot of them. I mean, the big one is India and Pakistan,” Trump had said.
