The Uttar Pradesh Assembly witnessed uproar on Tuesday, the second day of its Monsoon Session, over an incident in Fatehpur where a group of individuals tried to demolish a mausoleum on Monday, claiming that it was built after razing a temple.
While the Opposition demanded a debate and discussion over the incident during Zero Hour, alleging that local BJP leaders incited the crowd to take over the shrine, the government maintained that a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered and action will be taken as per the investigation.
Unsatisfied with the government’s reply and alleging that it was trying to save “rioters” and disturb communal harmony, Opposition legislators moved into the well of the House, raising slogans.
Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey said, “In Fatehpur, an announcement was made seven days back by a leader of a party to take over a mausoleum. It was done in a planned manner and it was claimed that this mausoleum belonged to Hindus. Later, a group of people were brought.”
“The police had put up barricades but appropriate force was not deployed, because of which these people were able to make their way to the site,” Pandey said, demanding a discussion over the issue and seeking to know what action the government took against the guilty.
He went on to allege that the “BJP government is trying to disturb communal harmony.” “It actually does not want to maintain peace. In my area also, a small shrine was demolished on the pressure of one of your leaders. It has become a trend across the state to demolish Muslim madrasas and mausoleums to benefit one-sided politics,” Pandey said.
