Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has officially approved a military plan for the occupation of Gaza City, located in the north of the Gaza Strip.
The plan, proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was already approved by Israel’s war cabinet on August 8.
Under the scheme, which has sparked widespread international criticism, the Israeli regime will take over Gaza City, beginning with a military operation followed by a gradual entry into the city, according to Anadolu news agency citing Israeli media outlets.
The plan will involve a broad forced evacuation of Palestinians from Gaza City, reportedly over two weeks.
In the meantime, an Israeli source told the regime’s official broadcaster, Kan, that the United States has requested a detailed review of the plan.
Israel is moving to take over Gaza after 22 months of war in the Gaza Strip, which has left nearly 62,000 Palestinians killed. Many of them have died due to starvation as Israel continues to restrict flow of aid to the territory.
Arab and some Western states coupled with international organizations have all warned that the Gaza City takeover plan would only exacerbate the already dire conditions in the territory.
