Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of coming to power in Gujarat through 'vote theft', Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged the ruling party is planning to replicate Bihar-like electoral roll revision across the country.
Inaugurating a 10-day training camp for Gujarat Congress's district presidents, Kharge said the Congress gave the Constitution and the right to vote to the people of the country, and the ruling BJP was weakening these institutions. Alleging 'vote theft' in Gujarat, Kharge said, "You have seen a glimpse of what happened with the voter list in Bihar. BJP is going to do the same thing everywhere. The PCC president here has also revealed how the BJP has come to power in Gujarat on the basis of vote theft."
The Congress leader claimed the results of the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections indicate people's support for the party and Congress will win the upcoming assembly polls in the state. Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Kharge said, "You gave us two Gujaratis who brought freedom to the country. They united the country. Now, you have given us two more Gujaratis who are working against freedom. They are dividing people."
Kharge's fresh attack against the BJP after Congress successfully organised 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' in poll-bound Bihar. The Congress-led Opposition strongly opposed the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll in Bihar. The Congress accused the poll body of manipulating the electoral roll in favour of the ruling BJP.
The Congress alleged that the Bihar SIR was aimed at disenfranchising the vast number of voters.
