Tehran: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Iran has repeatedly warned countries in the West Asia region about the threat posed by the Israeli regime, saying the Islamic Republic welcomes the emerging regional consensus on the matter.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the second meeting between Iran and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in Tehran on Tuesday, Araghchi, while addressing a number of issues, underscored the importance of unity and cooperation among regional states to deal with the Israeli threat. He was speaking a day after heads of state from Arab and Islamic countries met in Doha to discuss an Israeli attack on Qatar a week earlier and the regime's ongoing war on Gaza.
“The Doha summit was held at a very important time and circumstances in terms of confronting the Israeli regime's aggressions,” he said, adding that the high-level presence of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League indicated the attention of Muslim countries to the new regional developments.
The top diplomat also said what the Islamic Republic had warned years ago has now become “an undeniable reality” for all countries that “the Israeli regime is the main threat to the region with its unending aggressions.”
Responding to a question regarding Qatar’s role as a mediator in potential talks with the United States, Araghchi revealed that there are “several countries in the region” trying to play a positive role.
He explained further that the mediator or intermediary is not important, what is important is “the will of the other side—whether it is ready for an agreement based on mutual interests and free of threats and intimidation.”
Regarding Iran-ECO meeting, he said the Islamic Republic is keen on strengthening the bloc and that requests from interested states for membership will be reviewed by the current members. “We are drafting a 10-year vision for ECO to make its activities more focused and extensive, enabling it to play a greater role in regional economic development,” Araghchi added.
On President Masoud Pezeshkian's presence at the UN General Assembly, the Foreign Minister noted that Iran has always had an active and prominent presence in the UN and will use this platform to bring the voice of the Iranian people to the world, defend their rights, and explain the positions of the Islamic Republic on regional and international issues.
