New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has maintained his view that US President Donald Trump is a “fascist” despite their cordial White House meeting.
New York City’s Mayor-elect had a friendly meeting with Trump at the White House in Washington, DC, on Friday.
On Sunday, the incoming NYC mayor said that despite the surprisingly friendly meeting between them, he still believes Trump is a “fascist.”
Trump, a former New Yorker who was born and brought up in the city, had called Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic” in a social media post following the incoming mayor’s election victory.
He even suggested the Ugandan-born New Yorker should be deported back to Africa.
However, during their meeting in the White House, Trump said he aimed to help Mamdani make the US’s biggest and most expensive city, New York, a better place for its several million residents.
“We’ve just had a great … very productive meeting. We have one thing in common: we want this city of ours that we love to do very well,” Trump said later.
“We are going to be helping him to make everybody’s dream come true: having a strong and very safe New York.”
Trump, who seemed charmed by Mamdani, said he was confident that the new Mayor, who is a Muslim, will do a “great job” in New York.
In an interview with NBC on Sunday, Mamdani explained his meeting with Trump and elaborated on his views about him.
“I found the meeting that I had with the president a productive one and a meeting that came back again and again to the central themes of the campaign that we ran: the cost of housing, cost of childcare, the cost of groceries, the cost of utilities.”
Mamdani said after the White House meeting, he still believes Trump is a “fascist” and a “despot”; however, he also pointed out he plans on working with the White House on New Yorkers’ behalf.
