Brazil’s Lula Offers to Mediate Between U.S. and Venezuela

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has announced his readiness to mediate the tensions initiated by the United States against the Venezuelan government.
Lula stated that he had previously spoken with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, emphasizing the possibility of negotiation without resorting to conflict.
“One can negotiate without war. I am always concerned about what is behind the scenes in this matter,” Lula remarked, adding that he had also discussed the situation with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Brazilian president cautioned against the increasing tensions from Washington towards Caracas, suggesting they are driven by hidden motives of powerful groups.
He further noted that he was a founding member of the Group of Friends of Venezuela and had attempted to mediate between the U.S. and the government of then-President Hugo Chávez during the eight-year administration of former U.S. President George W. Bush. He expressed his intention to pursue a similar approach with Trump and Maduro
