Congress general secretary KC Venugopal on Wednesday once again alleged that Christians were being selectively targeted in BJP-ruled states and said the arrest of a Christian priest in Nagpur was a misuse of state machinery under the pretext of religious conversion laws. He demanded withdrawal of the FIR against the priest.
In a post on X, Venugopal said week after week, members of the Christian community were being harassed simply for practising their faith. Referring to the recent arrest in Maharashtra, he termed the action condemnable and claimed it showed a clear pattern of intimidation wherever the BJP was in power.
Venugopal alleged that the BJP was using conversion laws as a tool to harass minorities, while allowing vigilante groups to operate freely. He said the incident in Nagpur was triggered by alleged hooliganism by Bajrang Dal activists, yet action was taken against a priest instead of those who created the disturbance.
He further claimed that religious polarisation and bigotry were increasing steadily, making life difficult for minorities living in BJP-governed states. According to him, the situation reflected a growing intolerance that went against the country’s constitutional values.
