Extending New Year greetings to the people, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday called for a mass movement to safeguard the rights of the vulnerable, including the right to work, vote and live with dignity.
In a post on X, Mr. Kharge emphasised the need to protect the Constitution and democratic values. “On this joyful new year, I extend my warmest greetings to all of you. Let us make this year a mass movement to protect the rights of the vulnerable — the right to work, the right to vote and the right to live with dignity,” he said.
He said citizens must collectively work to uphold constitutional values, strengthen democracy and promote social harmony. Employment for the youth, safety for women, prosperity for farmers, dignity for those on the margins and an improved quality of life for all should be common goals, he added.
Mr. Kharge also expressed hope that the year would bring happiness, prosperity and progress to everyone.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, also conveyed New Year wishes on X, saying he hoped the year would bring happiness, good health and success to all.
On Wednesday, Mr. Kharge had criticised the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, alleging that plunder, corruption and misgovernance continued to weigh on the country as it entered 2026.
In another post on X, he said it was important to remind people how the country had been governed in 2025, the eleventh year of BJP rule. He listed 14 issues, including the alleged repeal of MGNREGA, a weakening rupee, the SIR (special intensive revision) exercise and rising unemployment, to support his claims.
Responding to the remarks, BJP president J.P. Nadda accused Mr. Kharge of spreading falsehoods against the NDA government and said the Congress continued to peddle untruths despite being rejected by voters in successive elections.
