The Iranian foreign minister has censured the United States for requesting an emergency UN Security Council session on foreign-backed riots in the country, saying the move is a tactic by Washington to cover up its crimes against the nation.
Abbas Araghchi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday as the 15-member UN body held a meeting on Iran at the request of the US.
“The US move to convene a UN Security Council meeting under the pretext of addressing Iran’s internal developments is a tactic to deflect criticism by going on the offensive,” Araghchi said.
“The US, which has imposed oppressive sanctions on the Iranian nation and collaborated with the Zionist regime in [last year’s] military aggression against Iran, is responsible for the killing of thousands of Iranian citizens, while contributing to the killing of hundreds of Iranians by armed terrorists during the recent unrest. Thus, the US cannot conceal its own crimes by convening a Security Council meeting.”
The US joined the Israeli regime in bombing Iran's nuclear facilities in June last year.
Israel launched an illegal aggression against Iran on June 13, triggering a 12-day war that killed at least 1,064 people in the country. On June 24, Iran, through its successful retaliatory operations, managed to impose a halt to the terrorist assault.
Recently, the US has exploited foreign-backed riots to threaten military action against the country.
Peaceful demonstrations over economic hardship escalated into riots, fueled by remarks by American and Israeli officials, with foreign-backed armed mercenaries damaging public property and causing casualties among civilians and security forces.
The top Iranian diplomat highlighted the direct role of the Zionist regime in arming and organizing armed terrorists, as well as the United States’ support for them.
He also called on the UN to condemn the horrific Daesh-style crimes committed against Iranian policemen and ordinary citizens as armed terrorists killed children and women, burned bodies, attacked hospitals, set fire to ambulances and fire trucks, and vandalized mosques and cultural centers.
“Those who themselves have a long record of systematic human rights violations and are complicit in the Zionist regime’s genocide of Palestinians possess no credibility or standing to pretend they care about Iranians,” he added.
Guterres, for his part, said all governments should respect fundamental human rights, rejecting any form of interference in the domestic affairs of other countries, including military intervention.
He further underscored the need for upholding the principles of the UN Charter, especially the prohibition on the use or threat of force.
Iran sharply slammed Washington during the UNSC meeting on foreign-backed riots on Thursday.
Iran’s Deputy UN Ambassador Gholamhossein Darzi called it “shameful” that the United States had turned the Security Council into “a scene for theater” through unfounded allegations.
“This is in line with the United States regime in dismantling and disgracing the United Nations system,” he said.
Darzi slammed Washington for resorting to “lies, distortions of facts, and deliberate disinformation,” warning that threats of force would violate international law.
Russia called US rhetoric “dangerous,” while China rejected interference and urged restraint.
