West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday urged judges of the Supreme Court to save the Constitution.
Ms. Banerjee made the remarks while speaking at the inauguration of a new building of the Circuit Bench of Calcutta High Court, Jalpaiguri, in presence of judges of the Supreme Court, including Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant.
“I am not speaking for myself — I am saying this to save democracy, save the people, save the judiciary, save the country, and save the Constitution. We are under your custody. You are the guardians of the Constitution. Nobody is above you,” she said.
The Trinamool Congress chairperson said that she requested the “CJI and all judges to ensure that our Constitution is protected from disaster and that our democracy is safeguarded”. “Our safety, security, history, geography, and boundaries must all be protected. The media should not conduct media trials before cases are finalised; this has become a trend to malign people. Please ensure that agencies do not deliberately attempt to defame citizens,” she said.
Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, Justice Sujoy Paul, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and judges of Supreme Court, Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, were present at the event.
Ms. Banerjee’s remarks come at a time when she is party to a petition in the Supreme Court filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), alleging that she had forcibly taken away documents during a raid by the agency on January 8.
Ms. Banerjee had intervened during ED raids on the residence and office of I-PAC director Pratik Jain in Kolkata and had taken away documents, mobile phone and a laptop.
