The Karnataka government has revised the school timings for Urdu-medium junior primary and secondary schools during Ramzan, which will run from mid-February until March 20. According to a directive from the Urdu and Other Minority Language Schools, the new timings will be from 8:00 am to 12:45 pm.
The move has been sharply criticised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with leaders accusing the Congress-led government of indulging in "appeasement politics". The BJP questioned whether similar facilities would be made for Hindu festivals.
“This is appeasement politics. The Congress party always goes against Hinduism. Even Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is doing the same despite being a Hindu,” said Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council.
“If the government is giving special attention to Ramzan, why not to Hindus? People of Karnataka will feel this government is solely focused on Muslims for the sake of votes,” Narayanaswamy added.
BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also raised concerns, questioning if similar leniency would be shown during Navratri.
“You’re allowing teachers and staff to leave early during Ramzan, but will the same be allowed during Navratri? Congress always puts its vote bank first. They don't have the vision of doing things fairly and equally as per the Constitution. This has been seen in Karnataka again and again,” Poonawalla.
The Congress hit back with Home Minister G. Parameshwara accusing the BJP of opposing efforts to treat all communities equally.
“These people have been neglected for thousands of years. Do you not want them to be treated equally? If this is intolerable, then it shows you're against equality,” Parameshwara said.
