The US embassy in the so-called Green Zone of the Iraqi capital Baghdad has come under a drone strike, with no immediate reports about possible casualties and the extent of damage caused.
According to Iraqi news outlets, the diplomatic mission in the heart of Baghdad was struck with a swarm of kamikaze drones early on Tuesday, and columns of smoke and fire could be seen rising from the site.
Local sources asserted that the air defense missile systems deployed adjacent to the massive building sought to intercept and shoot down the unmanned aircraft, but to no avail.
American warplanes were said to be hovering in the skies over the embassy following the drone attack.
Meanwhile, there were reports that fighters from the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have launched a simultaneous coordinated operation against all US military bases across the Arab nation.
A short while ago, multiple explosions ripped through the US-operated Victory Airbase close to the Baghdad International Airport, but no information on potential casualties and damage was quickly available.
On March 12, the Iraqi Resistance group announced that they had carried out dozens of strikes, targeting American bases across Iraq and the region in 24 hours.
According to statements released by the anti-terror group, the operation was conducted with several drones as part of revenge for the continued aggression of US forces in the region, and in retaliation for Washington’s ongoing attacks on the Axis of Resistance.
