Tehran: A committee overseeing funeral arrangements announced Saturday the schedule of farewell and burial ceremonies for the late Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and several of his family members.
According to a statement from the Commemoration Committee for the Bloody Ascension of the Martyred Militant Imam, public farewell ceremonies will be held July 4-5 at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla. The dates correspond to the 13th and 14th of Tir in the Persian calendar, or the 19th and 20th of the lunar month of Muharram.
A funeral procession is scheduled in Tehran on July 6, followed by a second procession on July 7 in the holy city of Qom, the committee said.
The final funeral ritual will take place July 9 in the holy city of Mashhad, coinciding with the eve of the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Sajjad (AS), also known as Zayn al-Abidin, the fourth Shia imam and a great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The late leader will be laid to rest at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shia imam, in Mashhad.
The committee issued a general invitation to Iranian citizens, free people of the world, followers of the Islamic school and all interested individuals to attend the ceremonies.
The committee thanked government bodies, civil society groups and other institutions for their assistance, while emphasizing that the principal role in organizing the events remains with the people, who have continued mourning and remaining on the scene.
Praying for a “magnificent and unique manifestation” of the upcoming event, the committee said further details would be announced later.
Ayatollah Khamenei and several members of his household were martyred in a terrorist US-Israeli strike targeting his residence in Tehran on February 28, the first day of the joint aggression against Iran.
