Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the ongoing youth-led protests, saying the latter was "rattled" and alleged that he had harmed the future of the young people the most.
The Congress leader also claimed that PM Modi had allowed and encouraged the total capture and destruction of India's education system, and protected every person responsible for it.
"You are the one who has harmed the future of our youth the most. You allowed and encouraged the total capture and destruction of our education system – and protected every person responsible for it," Gandhi said on X.
This came after the Prime Minister said the welfare and interest of the country's youth is the top priority of the government and anyone trying to harm their future will not be spared.
"Nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth! Those who try to harm the future of our youth will not be spared," he said in a post on X.
PM Modi further said he has directed the concerned authorities and officials to take all necessary steps on the issue of paper leaks. "This continues our series of steps for safeguarding the interests of students," he stated.
OPPOSITION MOUNTS ATTACK ON GOVERNMENT
The Prime Minister's statement came as opposition leaders continued to target the BJP-led central government over the handling of the Cockroach Janta Party-led agitation at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
On Wednesday, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav took a jibe at the BJP over a press conference addressed by Union Health Minister JP Nadda on alleged paper leaks, saying this alone demonstrates just how non-serious the ruling party is about resolving such issues.
At the press conference in Delhi, Nadda accused Gandhi of playing politics over the NEET controversy and urged the opposition to allow an "intensive discussion" on the issue in Parliament to find a "permanent solution", instead of indulging in a blame game.
Following the presser, Yadav, in a post in Hindi on X, said, "Heard that the BJP government has just hastily called a press conference in response to the youngsters' agitation. The department belongs to one minister, yet the response comes from another. This fact alone demonstrates how non-serious the BJP is about resolving this issue and in a way, it is making a mockery of the youngsters, who have given this hollow press conference a score of zero and declared it a failure."
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia also launched a scathing attack on PM Modi, asserting that the announcement to set up fast-track courts was just to punish "small-time crooks" and that the "heat of the investigation" won't be allowed to reach Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
In a post (originally in Hindi), the ex-Delhi Deputy Chief Minister wrote, "Such a massive scandal has erupted, so many children have taken their own lives because of your paper leak fiasco, scams have come to light in almost every exam in the country, the entire nation's GenZ is hitting the streets demanding that the Education Minister resign.. And you're saying that—by setting up fast-track courts, you'll get punishment for the small-time crooks below, those four private pawns. But you won't let the heat of the investigation touch your dear minister. Could it be, Mr. Modi, that this whole paper leak game is being run from your office?"
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi also amplified the central demand of the protesters – Pradhan's resignation. In an X post, she said, "A Minister stepping down for failing the nation and his own cabinet responsibility is how accountability works. Globally. Thats the first step followed by listening to what the students want and most importantly bringing in the best expertise India has to the table to rework the entire education examination system."
