Priyanka Gandhi raises concerns over women’s safety after minor girl’s alleged gang rape and murder in Delhi

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra highlighted issues surrounding women’s safety following the reported gang rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in Swaroop Nagar, Delhi. She stated that numerous women suffer atrocities and violence without receiving adequate action from authorities, noting that First Information Reports (FIRs) are frequently not registered in such cases.
In a post on X, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wrote, “In Delhi, all limits of cruelty were crossed against a 17-year-old girl, and after that, she was brutally murdered. Just a few days earlier, another minor girl was raped. No one in the country is willing to take responsibility for women’s safety—only empty talk about women’s development is offered.”
She added, “Hundreds of women face atrocities and violence, but they cannot hope for concrete action against the perpetrators—FIRs aren’t even filed. Both society and the government have completely failed in granting women their rights to safety, freedom, and equality.”
The incident came to light on the morning of September 13 when police were alerted to a dead body found in an open field near Jaipal Rana’s field at Kushak Road in Swaroop Nagar. Four individuals, including three juveniles, were apprehended in connection with the case.
Delhi Police reported that the investigation was aided by analysing footage from more than 50 CCTV cameras and tracing a suspected tempo allegedly used in the crime. The adult accused has been identified as Shivam alias Sudama alias Chuchu, son of Ganesh, residing in Gali No. 2, Khadda Colony, Swaroop Nagar. The juveniles involved are aged 17, 17, and 16 years.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognisance of the incident. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, requesting a time-bound and comprehensive investigation, rigorous prosecution, and preservation of all forensic evidence.
The Commission called for appropriate action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with a preliminary assessment under Section 15 of the Juvenile Justice Act for the accused aged 16 to 18 years.
Additionally, the NCW has demanded security, legal aid, counselling, and victim compensation for the bereaved family, along with an Action Taken Report within seven days.
Following the preliminary investigation, an FIR numbered 380/2026 was registered at Swaroop Nagar Police Station under Sections 103(1), 238(A), 65(1), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as Section 6 of the POCSO Act, Delhi Police confirmed.
