Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has announced that the INDIA bloc will stage another protest on October 12, following alleged violence against students and women during a demonstration in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Speaking on X, the Congress MP accused the Delhi Police and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers of resorting to violence during the CJP-led protest. He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “Mogambo,” a character from the film ‘Mr India’, alleging that the government is attempting to suppress the voices of youth and students.
Gandhi stated: “Amit Shah’s Delhi Police has not only resorted to thuggery itself but is also giving a free hand and encouragement to the real goons of the RSS-BJP to perpetrate violence against women and the youth.” He warned that government suppression would only increase the anger of younger generations. “As I had said, the more ‘Mogambo Modi’ and his government try to suppress them, the more the anger of Gen Z and the students will intensify,” he said.
He added: “On Monday, October 12, the Congress, the entire INDIA alliance, and the youth of the country will once again take to the streets in large numbers. And this time, too, the voice will resonate across the nation—louder than ever before.” Targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gandhi challenged: “@AmitShah, bring as many police personnel as you wish—10,000, 20,000, or 40,000. Summon as many BJP-RSS goons as you please. We will not be intimidated. We will not back down. This fight will not stop now!”
He also announced that the Opposition would meet Chief Justice Surya Kant on Monday to demand accountability over the alleged violence and treatment of protesters, stating, “the guardians of the law cannot sit with a blindfold on while the Constitution is being torn to shreds and democracy trampled upon on the streets of Delhi.” Gandhi emphasised, “Will the Constitution be reduced to tatters while we remain silent? That will absolutely not happen. We will ensure accountability!”
In further posts, Gandhi accused Prime Minister Modi of damaging India’s democracy through electoral malpractice and suppressing dissent. He described the situation in Delhi as follows: “This is the scene witnessed in New Delhi today: the entire city shut down, the internet suspended, and students being beaten by both the police and BJP goons.”
Gandhi claimed the government had failed to acknowledge the growing anger among young people and asserted that the Opposition had cornered the Prime Minister. “No matter how hard they try to intimidate, Modi fails to realise that the game he has been playing for the past 10–15 years is now over. The opposition has cornered him from all sides,” he said.
He also promised justice for the students and youth allegedly attacked during the protest, stating, “The youth and students who were attacked today will get justice, and the attackers will receive a fitting response. ‘Mogambo’ Modi and his associates—who are destroying India’s democracy and Constitution—will not escape accountability.”
Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor criticised the Prime Minister by sharing a 2015 post in which Modi reflected on lessons from the anti-Emergency movement in his youth. Tharoor commented, “Thanks for teaching today’s youngsters many of the same lessons, Modiji!”
On Saturday, Delhi witnessed heightened security measures, mass detentions, and political confrontation as the protest organised by the Citizens for Judicial Progress (CJP) at Jantar Mantar saw a heavy police presence. The demonstration called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Authorities detained CJP members Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das from an aircraft. Barricades were erected at the Ghazipur border, and gates at 45 Metro stations remained closed, prompting allegations of a crackdown on democratic rights and a counterattack by the BJP.
Approximately 1,000 individuals were detained in the national capital, including prominent Opposition leaders such as Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Pinarayi Vijayan, and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.
