A senior Hamas official says Palestinian resistance groups will never accept to be disarmed, saying the issue is their red line.
Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri says disarming is non-negotiable for his movement and other Palestinian groups in discussions aimed at extending the fragile ceasefire in Gaza.
“Any talk about the resistance’s weapons is nonsense. The resistance’s weapons are a red line for Hamas and all resistance factions,” Abu Zuhri told AFP shortly after Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called for the “full demilitarization” of Gaza as a condition to advance to the second stage of the ceasefire.
“We don’t have an agreement on phase two,” Saar remarked. “We demand total demilitarization of Gaza—Hamas and Islamic Jihad. If they agree to that, we can implement it tomorrow.”
Phase one of the Gaza ceasefire, which took effect on January 19, expired over the weekend, without negotiations even starting on the second stage.
Israel has requested an extension of the first stage and has halted the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza to pressure Hamas.
The Palestinian resistance group has rejected this call and says it is ready to hold negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire, which calls for a permanent truce and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
