The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Wednesday warned that the body will stage nationwide protests if the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is passed in Parliament.
The AIMPLB, a leading body representing Muslims in India, has made it clear that they will not stay silent if the bill is passed into law.
During a media briefing in New Delhi, Syed Qasim Rasool, the spokesperson for the AIMPLB, stated that they will take all legal and constitutional actions available if the bill is passed.
“If this bill is passed in the Parliament, then we will start a nationwide movement against it. We won’t sit quietly. We will make use of all legal and constitutional provisions available to us. We will run a peaceful agitation until the proposed amendments are taken back," Rasool said.
The Waqf Bill, which includes amendments recommended by the 31-member Joint Committee of Parliament, is being tabled in the Lok Sabha today, with eight hours allocated for discussion. If passed by the Lower House, the bill will be moved to the Rajya Sabha for further consideration.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill aims to amend the 1995 Act that governs Waqf properties in India. The Centre has stated that the amendments are intended to improve the management of Waqf properties across the country.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, have opposed the bill, claiming that the panel formed to examine it did not consider the suggestions put forward by opposition MPs.
Bill To Benefit Muslim Community
Meanwhile, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva expressed his disappointment over those opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. “I feel pity on the mentality of those who are opposing this bill. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is going to work towards the progress of all those people whose rights have been snatched away," he said.
“This bill was brought in the House in August last year, after which it was sent to the JPC. People from all over India have given their suggestions to the JPC," he stated.
Sachdeva further stressed that the bill would benefit the poor Muslim community and contributes to their development. “If our poor Muslim brothers and sisters benefit from this bill, and their development happens, then I don’t understand what these opposition leaders have to object to," he added.
