Hamas says the fate of American-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander, who was held as a captive by the Palestinian resistance group, remains unknown after an aerial assault by the Tel Aviv regime killed one of the captive’s guards.
Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas’ military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, said on Saturday that the group had recovered the body of a resistance fighter tasked with guarding Alexander while it has no information about other members of his guard unit.
He also expressed Hamas’ commitment to safeguarding all Israeli captives and preserving their lives despite the occupying regime’s brutal aggression.
However, he added, Israeli captives’ “safety is now imperiled by the relentless airstrikes conducted by the Zionist enemy army.”
The criminal regime lies about the alleged mistreatment of its captives in an attempt to incite criticism against the resistance, “cover up the scandal of killing a number of its own prisoners” and prolong the suffering of those who are still held in the Gaza Strip, Abu Obeida said.
Alexander, of the 51st Battalion of the Israeli military’s Golani Brigade, was taken captive during Operation Al-Aqsa Storm led by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
On Tuesday, Hamas said it had lost contact with the team that was guarding the American-Israeli soldier after an Israeli bombardment targeted their location.
The announcement came a day after the group released a video, in which Alexander criticized Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet for failing to secure his release.
Last month, Hamas expressed its readiness to release Alexander along with the bodies of the four other American-Israeli captives, an offer which Israel rejected as “manipulation and psychological warfare.”
Israel launched a genocidal war on Gaza October 7, 2023, after Hamas carried out its historic operation against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.
In its operation, Hamas took 251 Israelis captive, 58 of whom now remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 34 confirmed dead by the occupation’s military. Several of the captives have been killed in the regime’s strikes on the besieged territory.
After one year and a half of war, the Tel Aviv regime has failed to achieve its declared objectives in Gaza, despite killing at least 51,157 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
