Tehran: Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei says the U.S. had “torpedoed diplomacy” and could no longer be trusted, reaffirming Iran’s right to pursue peaceful nuclear energy under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (N.P.T).
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Wednesday, Baqaei discussed the dimensions and consequences of the Israeli regime’s military aggression and the accompanying U.S. support against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
He stressed that the U.S. military attacks constitute an aggressive act not only against Iran’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty, but also represent a serious violation of international law, the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and the ethics upheld by the global community.
He added that the primary concern for the international community should be the condemnation of the illegal actions taken by the United States.
On June 22, the U.S. dropped six bunker-buster bombs on the Fordow nuclear facility and launched dozens of submarine-based cruise missile attacks on two other sites in Natanz and Isfahan as part of its campaign against Iran’s nuclear program.
Referring to the importance of diplomacy for Iran, Baqaei said that even during the intensification of the imposed war against the Iranians, “we continued to engage in dialogue with various parties to save lives and ensure our national security.”
Addressing a recent bill passed by the Iranian parliament to suspend cooperation with the United Nations nuclear watchdog, he said the bill “talks about suspending, not putting an end to the cooperation.”
“Don’t you think it is only natural for the representatives of a nation that has come under an egregious act of aggression to reconsider the way they have been dealing with the International Atomic Energy Agency (I.A.E.A.)?”
Iran’s parliament has passed a bill that would effectively suspend the country’s cooperation with the I.A.E.A., as Iran insists it will not give up its civilian nuclear program in the wake of massive attacks on the country by Israel and the United States.
