Tehran: The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, says it has approved the latest Gaza truce proposal put forward by Qatar and Egypt to end the Israeli regime’s genocidal war on Gaza.
“Hamas, along with the Palestinian factions, relayed their acceptance of the proposal put forward yesterday by the Qatari and Egyptian mediators,” Hamas said in a brief statement on Monday, carried by Al Jazeera news network.
The proposed deal comes after negotiations between Hamas, Egyptian, and Qatari officials in Cairo and is reported to be nearly identical to the one that was put forward by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and was accepted by Israel.
Over the past two years, Hamas has accepted proposals for a ceasefire and the release of Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners. But Israel has rejected them, pressing ahead with its military campaign in Gaza, which the regime is now expanding by moving to take over Gaza City.
The major sticking point has been the duration of the ceasefire. Hamas wants a permanent end to the war, but Israel seeks a temporary truce that would allow it to resume its military operations.
Hamas remains committed to ending war: Official
A senior Hamas official said the Palestinian movement is not seeking to undermine the ongoing negotiations and has shown flexibility to serve national interests in efforts to end the Israeli war on Gaza.
Taher al-Nounou said that the group had accepted a proposal that he described as a “middle ground” compared with previous positions of both Hamas and the Israeli regime.
“By accepting this new proposal, we prioritized national interests and hope it will pave the way toward ending the war,” he told Shehab News Agency.
Al-Nounou noted that talks for a comprehensive agreement and prisoner exchange would begin on the first day of any potential ceasefire.
He said Hamas remains committed to ending the war despite what he called Israel’s disregard for the negotiations.
He urged mediators to pressure Israel into accepting the deal, adding that Hamas has not received any conditions from the Israeli side.
“The proposal includes American guarantees, which we have accepted, but it contains no clause regarding the weapons of the Resistance,” he added.
Islamic Jihad approves proposal to ‘protect Palestinian people’
Meanwhile, Islamic Jihad spokesperson Muhammad al-Haj Musa said the group had also agreed to the proposal to “protect the Palestinian people” and awaits the response of the occupying regime.
Musa stressed that Resistance maintains red lines that cannot be crossed, adding that flexibility in negotiations does not amount to weakness.
