Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has expressed her support for the Global Sumud Flotilla, scheduled to depart for Gaza at the end of August, as part of a global effort to break the illegal Israeli blockade on the besieged territory and open up a humanitarian corridor.
Thunberg made the remarks during an interview with Press TV on Saturday, just one day before the largest Gaza-bound freedom flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid and activists, is set to depart from Barcelona.
She emphasized that the project signifies a global uprising of people who are standing up to break the Israeli siege against Gaza, especially in the absence of government action.
“When our governments fail to step up, the people will take their place, and their atrocities and their complicity in the genocide in Gaza is not something we can stand for,” the young activist said.
Thunberg further said that approximately 26,000 supporters have signed up to join the Gaza-bound mission, which marks the 38th attempt to break Israel's illegal siege on Gaza by sea, along with other initiatives aimed at ending the siege through land and other means.
She also stressed that this effort is part of a global uprising of people who are united in their refusal to tolerate the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Thunberg further clarified that the focus of this mission is not on the participants, but rather on the situation in Gaza, urging a shift in focus from questioning the activists' risks to addressing the necessity of such actions and the reasons behind the siege and apartheid state.
She condemned Israel's actions, including occupation, siege, and genocide, as blatant violations of international law and “completely unacceptable”.
Thunberg further criticized Israel for obstructing humanitarian aid during previous missions, intentionally causing starvation among millions of people, and emphasized that the mission is driven by a sense of solidarity, aiming to end occupation and siege, not just deliver food.
She also noted that the Palestinians are seeking an end to occupation and siege, not rescue, and the mission is a response to their call for global action to end complicity in genocide.
Thunberg further highlighted that the mission represents one of the many efforts being made by activists and organizers to fulfill the promise to the Palestinians and address the situation in Gaza.
On August 31, Thunberg will sail to Gaza from Barcelona with the Global Sumud Flotilla, joining thousands of activists in the largest maritime mission ever organized to break Israel’s siege.
Dozens of boats carrying hundreds of activists from as many as 44 nations are set to take part in the Global Sumud Flotilla.
It is the latest and largest Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) mission to set sail for Gaza in an attempt to break Israel’s US-backed genocidal siege on the embattled Palestinian territory.
Sumud means “perseverance” in Arabic—as it attempts to end Israel’s naval blockade and deliver desperately needed humanitarian aid, including food, medicines, and baby formula to the starving people of Gaza.
Since March 2, when Israel violated its ceasefire agreement with the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, the regime has sealed all border crossings, blocking the entry of humanitarian aid and further deepening Gaza’s already dire humanitarian crisis.
Earlier this month, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) confirmed that famine is occurring in the Gaza Governorate as of August 15.
Currently, over half a million Palestinians face starvation; by next month, the number could exceed 640,000.
